Salvador Dali: Madman or Genius? A Look at the Enigmatic Dali Museum

The Dali Museum, St. Petersburg, FL

Dali & his famous mustache
When people think of Spanish surrealist painter, Salvador Dali, they envision a madman with a mustache.  Dali’s perspective and personality have been celebrated for years, but never quite like in the Dali Museum, which offers a look inside the world of one of the most iconic artist of our time.

The last time I visited St. Petersburg, the new Salvador Dali Museum had been under construction. I remember visiting the older building when I was young, and was excited to revisit the works of the late surrealist painter with a fresh perspective. The new museum building earned high praise, as it was mentioned on AOL’s Buildings You Have to See Before You Die, and an even higher acclaim as it was the only building on the list that was located in the United States.
The Enigma
The Grand Entrance
The entire experience becomes a surreal one as you enter through the doors that house the Reynolds and Eleanor Morse collection. The museum’s interior is divided into several sections, each to accommodate a different purpose. The main lobby consists of the gift shop, ticketing counter and a café, affectionately named Café Gala after Dali’s wife. Upon paying, you’ll want to make sure to pick up the audio guide headphones, as it makes the navigation through the displays informative and very enjoyable.  A docent tour is also available every hour.

The Spiral Staircase
At the heart of the building sits a spiral staircase which winds up through the three stories of this dreamlike edifice. The staircase is said to embody Dali’s spirit as he had a fascination with spirals. As you climb the steps to the third floor where the galleries are located, the building begins to open up to a spectacular view of the St. Petersburg coast, which can easily be seen through the window panes of the Enigma (the glass form around the building).  This is the only section on the third floor where you will be allowed to take photographs as there is a strict policy against taking pictures inside the galleries, this is reinforced by the constant surveillance of security guards.

View of St. Pete from the Enigma
There are two galleries which sit across from each other on the third floor. The Tom and Mary James Wing for the Morse Collection displays 96 of Salvador Dali’s original oil paintings. Here, you will be guided through Dali’s history. You will learn about the Spanish surrealist painter’s life, from his adolescence to his later years, as told through the various stages of his paintings. You will discover harrowing tales about the relationships with his family (such as in Portrait of my Sister, first image below), as well as enchanting tales about his wife and his love of the unorthodox. This gallery features such fantastical and exquisite paintings as Gala Contemplating the Mediterranean Sea which at Twenty Meters becomes a Portrait of Abraham  Lincoln (second image below) and The Hallucinogenic Matador (third image below)

The second gallery, The Hough Family Wing displays dozens of Dali’s sketches, photographs of Dali, and displays of his surrealist objects such as the Lobster Telephone.  This gallery features two large screens that play interviews with Dali as well as a unique holographic exhibit of 1970’s shock rocker, Alice Cooper. One of the most enjoyable sections of this gallery is the student exhibit, which is a collection of Dali inspired art work contributed by local students. The talent showcased in this section is both amazing and inspiring.

Outside the museum
When making your way back down from the galleries (an optional elevator is available), you may want to stop by a quick snack at Café Gala, which features a menu of light fare with a Spanish theme. Tapas and small plates of appetizers are a specialty, along with traditional pastries, soups (gazpacho and caldo gallego), salads and sandwiches. (The Dali Museum)

The Dali Store
The Golden Rectangle
Before heading out, you may want to visit The Avant-Garden, where you can marvel at the building’s architecture from the outside. An explanation of the buildings structure through the use of the Golden Rectangle can be found on the tiles of the garden. The garden provides a prominent view of the one thousand unique panes of glass that compose the Enigma.  As you will learn on your tour, the panes of glass were dictated by the physics of the building, so that no two panes are the same. When the building was constructed, barcodes had to be placed on each pane to identify their position. At the garden you will also find a Dali inspired melting clock bench and a labyrinth.

Finally, you may definitely want to stop in at the Dali Museum store. Here you will find an assortment of Dali items that include everything from prints of Dali’s artwork to postcards, perfumes, jewelry, and a Dali mustache of your very own for the road.
Melting Clock Bench
All in all, the Salvador Dali experience is one that will leave a lasting impression and one that will undoubtedly have you question your own sanity for days to come. In the end, one question will be left lingering in your mind, “Salvador Dali: madman or genius?”

Lake Buena Vista, FL = Disney Magic

Lake Buena Vista, FL
While I am hesitant to journey into the wonderful world of Disney (I can write a whole blog dedicated to it), I wanted to mention some entertaining things to do in the Lake Buena Vista that didn't involve an entire day at a theme park, but may still involve some magic.
Disney Boardwalk copyright Disneypictures.net
After a long hot day at the parks, you might want to take a stroll at the Disney Boardwalk. An enchanting place where street performers keep audiences on their toes and the Epcot fireworks light up the night sky. You can also enjoy the season's latest sporting events at the ESPN Club or have a slice of pizza and some Disney dessert from the Boardwalk Bakery. You can have a look at all the Disney Boardwalk has to offer at Disney Boardwalk

Downtown Disney is as good as any day spent at a park. The possibilities for sightseeing are endless. They have an AMC movie theater complex (which is currently being renovated to accommodate fine dining), a Cirque De Soleil nightly show, several Disney stores (ranging from Christmas to Kitchen), a wide selection of restaurants, and Disney Quest, an interactive theme park, just to name a few. Enjoy all that Disney has to offer and more without ever setting a foot inside a theme park. (Though I highly recommend you do.)

Even Storm Troopers can't escape the linesat Disney
Attractions: The Characters in Flight air balloon ride at Downtown Disney takes you up 400 feet in the air to overlook the entire Disney complex. If you're a Disney fan, you wont want to miss this! (Check out the amazing video above) Another favorite activity of mine lies inside Disney Quest, at the animation studio where they'll teach you to draw some of your favorite beloved Disney characters.
Shopping: If you've got Disney fever, then Downtown Disney is the place to be. My favorite store is The World of Disney...but watch out for Stitch, he likes to spit! The Art of Disney shows the whimsical and elegant side of Disney with fine art and sculptures ready to be displayed in your living room.
Where to Eat: As featured on the Food Network, Earl of Sandwich makes the most delicious sandwiches you'll ever taste. Though a bit pricey, they are well worth the money. You can find Earl of Sandwich at Downtown Disney. The House of Blues at Downtown Disney is also a great spot to eat great food and listen to some good music.
Events: Ok, I admit, these are at the theme parks, but they're so much fun they deserved a mention. Disney's Hollywood Studios Star Wars Weekend & Epcot's Festival of Food and Wine are two of the most enjoyable experiences Disney has to offer. I try to attend annually as you never know what you'll see next. Here is a link to some exciting events going on in and around Disney: Disney Events

Kissimmee, FL = Entertainment

Kissimmee, FL
Although many people confuse it for Disney World, Kissimmee, Florida is actually the gateway to the magic. Irlo Bronson Highway (hwy 192) runs along the endless stretch of road that leads to all things Disney. But Disney aside, Kissimmee has a lot to offer. A favorite tourist spot on the 192 is Old Town, an enjoyable outing where you'll find bumper cars, bungee jumps and haunted houses. This spot provides a night out of good ole fashion fun for the whole family.

Old Town
Capone's Dinner Show
Kissimmee is also home to many, many restaurants. Chances are if you're in the mood for it, they'll have it along Hwy 192. You can also enjoy some fun dinner shows, like Capone's and Arabian Nights. Not in the mood for food, you can stop by one of the many souvenir shops and outlet malls where you can shop for Disney merchandise at a fraction of the price.

If you're out for some site seeing, make sure not to miss the historic district of Downtown Kissimmee. I personally love the architecture of the Osceola Courthouse.

Daytona Beach & Ponce De Leon, FL = Exhaustingly Delicious

Ponce De Leon Inlet
Welcome to Ponce Inlet

The idea of climbing a lighthouse seems fascinating and exciting, that is until you've climbed about 100 steep steps and realize you're only halfway through. However, when you reach the top, the view is your reward. Such is the case at the Ponce De Leon Lighthouse. Which quietly rests at the most southern tip of the Ponce De Leon Inlet near Daytona Beach, FL. For under $10 for 2 people, you can spend quite an interesting afternoon exploring the history of this 203 step lighthouse from the late 1800's.

If you travel north on the same coast you will find yourself in Daytona Beach, most popularly known for it's Daytona International Speedway races, Daytona Beach has lots of interesting stops for beach bums and non beach goers alike. The first stop is their historic Boardwalk Amusement Area and Pier. Although in recent times it's been run down, the Boardwalk is still a fun destination. Sitting next to the Atlantic Ocean, the boardwalk is home to a seaside fair complete with a carousel and an old fashioned arcade room. Several shops and eateries can also be found along the shore. If perhaps you're in the mood for a movie and some shopping, the more modern Ocean Walk Village is located directly next to the boardwalk.
Boardwalk Amusement Area & Pier
My personal favorite place in all of Daytona is the Angell & Phelps Chocolate Factory. In the downtown district of Daytona Beach sits this incredibly fantastic chocolate shoppe where they have every type of chocolate imaginable. There is a wide assortment of chocolate gifts and chocolate covered snacks. The factory provides free hourly tours for its visitors where you can learn and experience a whole other side of chocolate.

Enjoy samples of everything on the menu and accompany it with your favorite wine, and if you have room for dessert, try the lemoncello cake...you'll thank me later. You can find their menu at The Dish Menu

St. Petersburg = Historical Beauty

St. Petersburg copyright www.stpete.org

Next on the agenda is St. Petersburg, FL. I had visited St. Pete when I was about 10 and I was completely amazed by the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. I had anticipated returning for many years but never quite got around to it until recently. The views are still breathtaking, you can see out to sea in every direction you turn and the city is rich with history and culture.

The Dali Museum Under Construction
One of the most famous attractions in St. Petersburg is the Salvador Dali Museum, recently relocated and renovated to host the strangest and greatest collection of the late surrealist painter's work. The architecture of the new building is one that Dali himself would have been proud of, featuring what AOL calls, “a glass slug-like element that appears to crawl through the building and around the façade, a metaphor for Dalí's signature juxtaposition of the classical and fantastical.” Which is perhaps why the building is in their Buildings You Have to See Before You Die List.

If art isn't your thing, you won't have a problem finding other things to do. Near the Dali museum, and stretched out across the ocean, is The Pier. A five tear hub of entertainment, featuring shops, restaurants and even an aquarium. Although, I will admit The Pier has seen better days, it's definitely a site worth checking out. From the Pier you can take a trolley for only .25 cents that will give you an approximate half hour tour around the city's historic district, tour guide included. Along the tour you'll see sites such as the Holocaust Museum and one of the three outdoor open post offices left in the world.

Attractions: It's easy to loose yourself in the culture of St. Pete, but if you can, stop by Haslam's Book Store (Haslam's Books). The establishment is one of Florida's largest new and used bookstores and houses around 300,000 books. If you're an avid reader, you're sure to
enjoy this spot.
Shopping: If you're in the mood for some antiquing, head on over to the Central Avenue Antique Marketplace, which features an assortment of art, pottery, jewelry and antique furniture vendors.
View from The Columbia Restaurant
Where to Eat: I personally recommend The Columbia restaurant which sits on the fourth floor of The Pier. The Cuban cuisine is delectable and the views of the ocean from the glass windows are gorgeous. Don't forget to try the mojito. If you're out for a quick bite, then The Cupcake Spot will satisfy that sweet tooth and leave you craving for more with their array of delicious, hand-made cupcakes. Celebration, FL=Perfection

Celebration, FL copyright unknown

I began my journey across central Florida relatively close to my new home in Orlando, in a place called Celebration. For many years I had heard about the marvels that sat tucked away in this quiet community developed by the Walt Disney Company and I was intensely curious to see what a company like Disney could bring to life in the real world.

A typical house in Celebration. Picture copyright cambridge2000.com
What I discovered was a land of magic, where the blades of grass all seemed to stand together in perfect unity, and the sun shined brighter than anywhere else. It is a community that only Disney could have thought of. The architecture of the houses alone are worth the trip to this picturesque town.

No Swimming Please...Alligators ONLY
At the heart of the community there is an old fashioned Town Center with one-of-a-kind shops and plenty of delicious eateries to choose from. There is even a Starbucks Coffee nestled amidst the nostalgic views of yesteryear. At the center of it all, sits an alligator pond. That's right, you read correctly...Alligators. It's quite an experience to watch tourists and residents alike sit alongside the alligator pond and enjoy a good book in the sun. One of my favorite attractions in this town, has unfortunately closed down.Until this last December, the Town Center was home to a traditional 2 screen AMC theater, complete with architecture that rivals any movie backdrop.

If Celebration sounds like the destination for you, don't take my word for it, have a look on their official website, Celebration Town Center. As their slogan reads, "You've got to see this place!"

Attractions: The town is the attraction. Plan to spend the better part of your day marveling at all the beautiful homes and the surrealism of this place. And don't forget to take a stroll down the alligator pond...I'm pretty sure they keep them full and happy, so no worries.
Shopping:  If you're a pet lover or owner, you'll want to stop by the Woof Gang Bakery. The shop offers a vast variety of pet care products and fresh baked treats for your furry friends.
Where to Eat: With so much variety it's hard to choose just one. Take your pick from Irish, Japanese, Thai, and Cuban cuisines. If international foods are not your thing, don't worry, there is delicious pizza at Upper Crust Pizza and a variety of foods to entertain all taste buds at the Celebration Town Tavern.
Events: Celebration is home to many fun annual events. If you happen to be in the neighborhood around Christmas time, don't miss the annual snowfalls, which take place continuously every night. Here is their official calendar of events, Celebration Events.

Shades of Sunshine: An Introduction

After living in Miami for 27 years, I realized I didn't know much about the sunshine state besides my surroundings in South Florida. I had visited Orlando several times while vacationing at Disney, and had always been compelled to stay. In January 2010, I decided that I would make the move. Walt Disney World is now practically in my backyard and I love the mouse as much now as I did when I was 2. However, being on a college student budget, I decided to explore all that Central Florida has to offer, without the theme park expenses. Orlando is in the dead center of some of the most amazing sights and places that Florida has to offer, so with camera and tote bag in hand I set out to explore the different Shades of Sunshine.

This blog is designed to help you navigate through the various cities in Central Florida. You will find that at the bottom of each review I have included a “Don't Miss List” which gives you a quick overview of the experiences I found the most captivating. Please feel free to share any stories, pictures or recommend any good places, after all I'm still pretty new to the area. I'd also love to hear your feedback.
